Roofing in Wisbech
Wisbech has some of the best Georgian brick anywhere in the fens, and with it come parapet walls, hidden gutters and lead lined valleys behind the front elevation. That detailing looks superb and works well until a parapet gutter blocks or a lead joint fatigues, at which point the water has nowhere to go but inside, and it does it quietly for months before anyone sees a stain.
Behind the grand frontages there is a lot of Victorian brick with slate and clay tile, plus soft lime mortar that cement pointing has often made worse. Most of the town is in the conservation area, so repairs have to look right as well as work, which usually means matching materials rather than the quickest fix.
Our yard is on Crowland Road, Peterborough, about 15 miles away, so getting to Wisbech is a short run for us.
Brickwork raked out and repointed
Tiles and ridges put right
Chimney repairIt is a gutter hidden behind the front wall instead of hanging off the eaves. When it blocks there is no overflow, so water backs up over the lead and into the building. They want checking every year, not every ten.
Almost certainly cement pointing on soft brick. The joint is now harder than the brick, so the water leaves through the brick face and it spalls. Raking out and repointing in lime fixes it.
Yes, and we quote like for like so it fits what the council expects. If consent is needed we will say so before any work starts.
Ring Stanley and describe what the roof is doing. He will tell you straight whether it needs a repair, a section replacing, or nothing at all yet.
