Roofing in Peterborough

The roofs round here

Peterborough is really three roofs in one city. The Victorian terraces around Millfield and New England were slated or clay tiled and are now mostly on their second or third covering, often with old nails rusting through and mortar bedded ridges that have gone soft. The 1930s semis have concrete tiles that have gone porous and lost their surface, and the felt underneath them has usually perished at the eaves where it gets the most weather.

The newer estates are a different problem again. Concrete interlocking tile on thin battens, plastic roofline and a lot of shallow pitched extension flat roofs that were only ever going to last twenty years. Most of what we get called to in the city is one of those three things reaching the end of its life rather than anything dramatic.

Our yard is on Crowland Road, Peterborough, about 4 miles away, so getting to Peterborough is a short run for us.

What we get called out for in Peterborough

  • Slipped and cracked concrete tiles on 1930s and post-war semis
  • Felt that has perished at the eaves so water runs behind the gutter
  • Fascias, soffits and guttering rotted or sagging on older terraces
  • Extension and dormer flat roofs that have split or ponded

Peterborough roofing FAQs

My terrace is joined to next door, can you still work on just my side?

Yes. We work up to the party line and make the junction watertight. If the problem is sitting in the valley or the shared ridge we will tell you honestly, because those sometimes need a word with the neighbour before anyone spends money.

The tiles on my 1930s semi look rough. Is that repair or re-roof?

Concrete tiles go porous with age and start to flake. A handful of bad ones is a repair. If most of the roof is breaking up when you walk it, patching is money down the drain and we will say so.

Do you need scaffolding on a standard city semi?

For a small repair usually not, a tower or a ladder is enough. For a strip and re-cover, or anything along the eaves, scaffolding goes up because it is the only safe way to work along a roof edge.

Rather just talk it through?

Ring Stanley and describe what the roof is doing. He will tell you straight whether it needs a repair, a section replacing, or nothing at all yet.
