Repointing

About repointing

Mortar is meant to be softer than the brick. When it wears back the wall starts taking water, and on an exposed gable that shows up as damp inside. Most of the bad repointing we see was done with a strong cement mix smeared over the top of the old joint, which traps water in the brick and blows the faces off.

We rake the joints out to a proper depth, brush and damp them down, then point with a mix matched to the brick and the age of the house. The joint is finished to match what is already there, weatherstruck or bucket handle, so it does not look like a patch.

What the job includes

  • Joints raked out to depth, not skimmed over the old mortar
  • Mix matched to the brick, lime where the house needs lime
  • Joint profile finished to match the rest of the wall
  • Spalled or loose bricks cut out and replaced while we are there
  • Brickwork brushed down and the ground sheeted and cleared

Repointing FAQs

How do I know if it needs repointing?

Scrape a joint with a screwdriver. If the mortar crumbles out easily or you can get in more than about 5mm, it is due. Damp patches inside on the weather side are the other sign.

How long does it last?

Done properly, thirty years or more. Done as a cement smear over old mortar, a couple of winters before it starts letting go again.

Do you need scaffolding?

For a gable or anything above single storey, yes. Low level work can be done off a tower. Access is in the quote either way.

Will it stop my damp?

If the damp is coming through open joints, yes. If it is rising damp or a failed gutter we will tell you that instead of pointing a wall for no reason.

Rather just talk it through?

Ring Stanley and describe the wall, or send a photo on WhatsApp. He can usually tell from a picture whether it needs doing.
