Roofing in March
March grew around the railway, so there is a lot of Victorian and Edwardian brick with clay tile or slate, and behind most of them are the original rafters and battens. Those roofs are now on borrowed time. Once the slate nails corrode, slates slip in ones and twos every winter and you end up paying for repairs every year instead of paying once.
The post-war housing has concrete tile and, by now, brittle underfelt and tired roofline. The other thing we see a lot of here is soft mortar in the brickwork, especially on gable ends and chimney breasts that face the prevailing weather, which is why repointing and roofing so often get quoted together.

Roofline and guttering renewedThat is usually nail sickness. The nails holding the slates have rusted through, so they let go a few at a time. Once it starts it does not stop, and a re-roof works out cheaper than five more years of call-outs.
