Roofing in Bourne

The roofs round here

Bourne has a solid Georgian and Victorian core in brick and stone, and on those buildings the roof and the wall are one problem, not two. Rain runs off a tired parapet or a blocked hopper, soaks the brickwork, washes the old lime out of the joints, and the frost does the rest. Repointing the wall without sorting the water above it is a waste of a scaffold.

The post-war and later estates are more straightforward. Concrete tile, felt underlay that is now brittle, and roofline that has done its thirty years. Those roofs tend to be re-covered rather than repaired, because once the underfelt has gone at the eaves every wind-driven rain finds its way into the loft.

Our yard is on Crowland Road, Peterborough, about 13 miles away, so getting to Bourne is a short run for us.

Bourne roofing FAQs

Why does my wall keep going damp even after repointing?

Nearly always because water is still coming off the roof or a blocked gutter onto it. We look at the top of the wall before quoting to repoint the bottom of it.

Do I need to be in while the work is done?

No. Everything is outside. We need a tap and somewhere to put the skip, and we will ring you at the end of each day with where we are up to.

What mortar mix do you use on older brick?

It depends on the brick. Soft older brick gets a lime based mix so the mortar stays softer than the brick. Hard modern brick takes a sand and cement mix. Getting that the wrong way round damages the wall.

Rather just talk it through?

Ring Stanley and describe what the roof is doing. He will tell you straight whether it needs a repair, a section replacing, or nothing at all yet.
